Holiday Read, originally uploaded by holgarolga.
Welcome to the first of our Tuesday summer challenges for 2009! Those of you who took part last year should remember the rules, but here’s a recap for any new people. Each Tuesday between now and September we will post a challenge. To join in you just need to leave a comment with your answer. You have until the following Monday at midnight to enter. At the end of the summer we will draw names from a hat to win some special goodies, in three categories – Piglets (7 -11), Saddlebacks (12-16s) and Gloucester Old Spots (adults). So if you want to join in and we don’t know you, please tell us your age. The more times you enter, the better chance you have of winning, so remember to check back each Tuesday.
So, the first challenge. Well, one of my favourite things about the summer holidays is having time – to read, think and write. I am spending two weeeks in Croatia in August and I am planning what to take with me to read. I’m also looking forward to having time to write – in a book, with a pen, rather than at a computer. For the challenge this week, leave a comment telling us what you’re looking forward to doing this summer and what books you think I should pack in my suitcase!
See you next week,
Ella
I am looking forward to sleeping… i need a lot of sleep. In your suitcase you should pack real holiday reads that mean you barely have to think, so chick lit or something youve read before. Or anything youve been meaning to read for ages but never get the time!!
I am looking forward to going to Crete and walking in the white mountains at full moon.
I think you should pack The Hounds of the Morrigan in your suitcase. (Not the actual Hounds of the Morrigan, but just the book. Unless you want your suitcase or maybe the whole plane ripped to shreds by some mad celtic dogs.)
Hope you have a BRILLIANT time in Croatia.
I am looking forward to lying on the beaches in Portugal(and sleeping)
You should pack in your suit case Philip Pullmans dark materials as you need time to read it i only finished it because of a lot of rainy holidays hope this doesn’t happen to you

I am looking forward to catching up with all my friends (but it’s getting a bit hectic finding the time, and remembering who I’m seeing on what day) I’m also looking forward to my new tent arriving on Friday, as my old one broke when I went to a festival last week. Going to Cornwall is going to be fantastic as well, I’m (hopefully) going to learn how to surf! But it’s going to be hard as I have “stupid feet”… I don’t think I’m going to get much time to myself this summer, but the next sunny day, I’m going looking for a poppy field, and then I’ll have time to think. I don’t think that you should bring The Book Thief with you, even though it is a magnificent story, it made me cry an awful lot, and when you’re on holiday it isn’t necessarily a good thing. Although, when you’re on holiday it’s nice having a book that is entirely different from your situation. I hope you have a good time, remember to roll your clothes up when you pack!
Well, I don’t necessarily know yet, but I think I am going to Paris.
I think that if you are going to Croatia you should probably read:The 13 (and a half) lives of captain bluebear!
Thanks for all your comments, nice to hear what you’re all going to be getting up to this summer too. Leah and Elliott, I think I am looking forward to sleeping as much as you are! Ione, I had to stop reading ‘The Book Thief’ on the bus because it was making me cry! Ruben, I will have a look for the book you recommended. And walking in the white mountains at full moon sounds great – you should use that as the line in a poem.
Well…i can tell you soemthing i’m not looking forward to.
I’m turning into a mountain goat.
Okay, not literally becuase i don’t really fancy growing one of those goatie beards, but by the time my holiday is over i’m probably going to feel like one. You see, i’m travelling to switzerland with my scouts group to stay in in a shalay in the mountains.
it’s going to be beautiful, and a great experience, but it’s going to be such a shock.
Getting up at 4 in the morning, to go on a gruelling eight hour hike, isn’t exactly my idea of fun.!
Anyway i hope you enjoy your holiday, if you don’t mind something slightly depressing to read i’d suggest the Knoughts and Crosses series by Malorie Blackman. You’ve probably already read them but they’re completly and utterly amazing.
