The Ghost cinema, originally uploaded by phill.d.
Lots of memories are evoked when we go to the cinema, as both Piglets and Saddlebacks found out in their writing sessions this week. Local readers’ and writers’ forum, QueenSpark Books, are compiling interesting texts written by people from Brighton and Hove about the history of cinema in Brighton. They will publish the chosen extracts in a book. The Saddlebacks explored all the senses we associate with the cinema experience, and then wrote some of their own autobiographical stories. Here is Ronnie’s:
A series of unfortunate events at the Odeon
I entered the dark hole of love, laughter and tears. Where will this trip lead to, I wondered? I’d ceased to read any reviews. Cold air filled my nose and I was disappointed to find myself sitting next to a stale smelling smoker. I tried to ease up and was doing ok until those annoyingly poncy adverts started up – yes, good for you, you’ve found an air freshener right for your house, now can I watch the film? The small-talking daters hushed and on came the film. Soon after, I found myself greeting an unpleasant look from the lady in front and stopped my legs from swinging. The film was amateurish and hatefully dull. I wasn’t interested and found myself dipping into the popcorn bucket again only to find my tooth throbbing from biting onto some un-popped popcorn. Will nothing go right today? I sunk into my chair and found the answer was no. Those pointless puffs of foam never seemed to help my posture. Oh when will this film end?
Not a particularly positive experience for Ronnie! Have you seen a good film in Brighton recently? Post us a comment and let us know. If you want to find out more about writing for QueenSpark Books yourself (it’s open to all) take a look at their website. Closing date is February 20th.
It’s half term next week so we’ll be back on Tuesday 24th February, same time, same place. See you there.
